MKM Redcar, in conjunction with the Work Experience Challenge, has successfully guided around twenty 18-24 year olds through 4 week on-site work experience placements at the branch.
Scott McCabe of the Redcar branch recognises the importance of giving “people an opportunity to get experience in the workplace”. According to Scott, this vital experience offers potential future MKM employees the opportunity to both build their confidence and prepare them for future employment either within MKM, should a suitable role become available, or within the wider working world.
Scott describes how, “when the recruits are with us we try and give them a good, varied experience in all areas. This approach gives them the time to understand different parts of the business, each of which is crucial to its day to day running.
“From yard duties to stock control, customer care to transport and deliveries, experience in different parts of a business teaches the person on work experience the responsibilities which are central to any working environment. Seeing and working in different areas demonstrates how the business works as a whole, and also gives the individual a chance to see for themselves what it is that they enjoy about going to work.”
Alongside the obvious benefits of experiencing the working environment, Scott, a former recruiter, also spends time with them in a mentor capacity, talking through things like CV writing and interview techniques.
Congratulations to everyone at MKM Redcar for undertaking such a successful scheme, there’s no doubt the experience the placements are giving people is both beneficial and invaluable.
