‘Plot shop’ opens as UK first for self-build homes

Bicester is now home to the UK’s first ‘plot shop’, selling plots of land to aspiring self-builders who want to build their own home.

The plot shop is located on the high street in the town and sells plots of land on a nearby Oxfordshire site that customers can then arrange to build their own home, overseeing the design and build by the owner’s chosen builders.

The development site at Graven Hill is thought to be the largest of its kind in the UK and will eventually home 1,900 custom-built houses.

Minister for Housing and Planning, Alok Sharma, told UK Construction Week “With the opening of the UK’s first ‘plot shop’, the journey to building your own home can now start on the high-street.”

The plot shop hopes to make it easier for those thinking about designing and building their own home to access advice, making self-builds a real option for those wishing to get on the housing market.

Custom build schemes like these have become popular in Holland and Germany. They are said to carry less risk than traditional full self-build projects.

According to local council registers, over 18,000 people in the UK are seeking to build their own homes.
