Apprenticeships are not only valuable to those that are learning but they’re also a vital asset to many businesses across the country. As part of our #NationalApprenticeWeek focus we spoke to some of our Branch Directors to find out how apprentices have benefited their business.
Here’s what Derek Telfer, branch director of MKM Hexham had to say…
“Having an apprentice is a huge benefit to your business as you can mould them and coach them in a way that suits your way of working. They don’t have a predisposition to a certain way of working so they are open to taking on any challenge, that’s their point of difference. Our young apprentices are witty and proactive in their work. They are valuable asset within the team and get on well with customers alike.”
Here’s what he had to say about each of the apprentices working at Hexham:
“Sam our yard assistant is very intelligent, he takes on the task in hand and deals with it well. He’s always proactive in what he does, constantly going out and looking for more work. He has a great mannerism with both staff and customers. He is a real pleasure to work with.”
Kieran, our yard apprentice, has a positive approach to work which is felt by both the team and the customers he serves. He relishes every task he is set and very methodical with his work.
I would recommend to anyone to jump at the opportunity to hire an apprentice. You can watch them develop and set them on a great career path.”
“Every business must have youth within it, to enable it to develop new ideas, innovative ways of working and grow successfully. Ultimately, the business will only benefit by having an apprentice willing to learn and by giving them your time, to learn from.”
He also shared some kind words about his apprentice Tiffany.
“Tiffany began her career with MKM when the branch opened in August 2018, as a quiet member of staff. Tiffany has made great progress and has quickly become an indispensable member of the team. She is always trying to learn about all the products MKM can offer and is very adept at assisting all customers with their enquiries. In short she began her career with the business as a quiet unassuming character, but has quickly developed into a key asset for our branch.”
