Five Ways To Make A Difference
There are so many small and pocket-friendly changes we can all make to be kinder to our planet, here’s five ways to make a difference.
Choose sustainably sourced timber
By specifying and buying FSC or PEFC timber, you can be sure that it has been sustainably sourced from managed forests, and is not contributing to deforestation. MKM is proud to supply both FSC and PEFC timber, with complete chain of custody.

Use less water
Water is growing scarcer for billions of people, through physical shortages, lack of infrastructure, unpredictable rain and extended droughts, so we should conserve where we can. Using less water can save money too, turning off the tap when you brush your teeth could save 24 litres per day per person, or 8700 litres a year, equivalent to over £20.

Reduce energy use at home
Insulating your loft space can cut bills in the long term by reducing the energy needed to heat your home. If you turn down your thermostat by 1degree C, turn off appliances rather than leaving them on standby, or only boil the water you need in a kettle and you could save over £100 a year.

Change your bulbs or turn off lights
LED lights can help reduce your CO2 emissions and also save money. Switch to an LED bulb from a 100W incandescent bulb and you could save up to £9 per bulb a year, based on 1.5hrs a day, and a 850-lumen bulb.

Use less plastic
Not only is plastic made from fossil fuel, which releases carbon, but it’s hard to dispose of and is filling up our oceans. Can you switch from single-use water bottles or coffee cups to a reusable one that can be recycled?
